Scriptures point to Solomon carrying out the Godly work of King David. A proverb is defined as a statement of general truth or advice. King Solomon died in B.

This wisdom is evident throughout the book. Knowable Word author Peter Krol states that in order to really take in all that the book of Proverbs has to offer, you must first understand the first 9 chapters. These chapters are generally more repetitive and seem to oscillate around main themes, such as fearing the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Other themes include using money in the right context and running from sexual impurity. These first chapters make up the context of and set the foundation for the remainder of the book. As you read Proverbs, you may notice how the topics intertwine and loop but in ways just different enough that it could pass as a new topic.

Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge, — Proverbs English Standard Version. Call out for insight, and cry aloud for understanding. Do yourself a favor and love wisdom. Learn all you can, then watch your life flourish and prosper! How then does a man gain the essence of wisdom? We cross the threshold of true knowledge when we live in complete awe and adoration of God. Stubborn know-it-alls will never stop to do this, for they scorn true wisdom and knowledge.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil. Stick with wisdom and she will stick to you, protecting you throughout your days. She will rescue all those who passionately listen to her voice. Wisdom is the most important thing; so get wisdom. If it costs everything you have, get understanding. Those who find true wisdom obtain the tools for understanding, the proper way to live, for they will have a fountain of blessing pouring into their lives.

To gain the riches of wisdom is far greater than gaining the wealth of the world. As wisdom increases, a great treasure is imparted, greater than many bars of refined gold. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. Locusts—they have no king, but they march in formation.

Your boast becomes a prophecy of a future failure. But walking in humility helps you to make wise decisions. Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise. Exalting yourself is disgusting to the Lord, for pride attracts his punishment- and you can count on that! It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud. Pride comes before a disaster, but humility comes before respect. Haughty eyes, a proud heart, and evil actions are all sin.

An arrogant man is inflated with pride — nothing but a snooty scoffer in love with his own opinion. Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

The second is devoted exclusively to instruction for kings. The third , effectively an eqilogue to the whole, is an impressive acrostic poem honoring the wife of noble character cf. Ru and note. She demonstrates, and thus epitomizes, many of the qualities and values identified with wisdom throughout the book.

In view of the fact that Proverbs is primarily addressed to young men on the threshold of mature life, this focus on the ideal wife appears surprising. But its purpose may be twofold: 1 to offer counsel on the kind of wife a young man ought to seek, and 2 in a subtle way to advise the young man again to marry Lady Wisdom, thus returning to the theme of chs.

In any event, the concluding epitomizing of wisdom in the wife of noble character forms a literary frame with the opening discourses, where wisdom is personified as a woman. All rights reserved.
