I became the best friend of young Amy and Rory. Growing up with my parents, awaiting the arrival of the Doctor. I was trained and conditioned for one purpose, I was born to kill the Doctor, and I did so with a kiss.
A kiss poisoned by the Judas Tree. And so I gave all my remaining lives to restore his. Because I knew the Doctor was worth it. Rule 1, the Doctor lies. The universe was rebooted and the Doctor erased from history, but in spite of this River was somehow able to retain her knowledge of him as well as her diary though its pages were now blank , which she gave to Amy as a wedding present to prompt her to remember the Time Lord and restore his existence.
It was whilst imprisoned in the Stormcage that River was asked by an unknowing Rory to return to the place of her birth in order to help the Doctor rescue Amy and her infant self. She then travelled back to and helped the Doctor defeat the Silence, but was careful not to encounter her child self or alter her own timeline in any way.
It was at the end of this adventure that River kissed the Doctor as he returned her to the Stormcage — before realising that from his perspective it was their first kiss. With the Doctor having faked his death and later erased himself from every database in the universe in the mini-episode The Inforarium, suddenly those responsible had no evidence that the man River had been accused of killing had ever existed, and as such she received a pardon and was freed from the Stormcage.
She returned to her archaeological studies, becoming a professor in the process. River was already in New York investigating the Angels, and after teaming up with the Doctor and friends to defeat them in , she was also present when Amy made her fateful decision to join Rory in the past to live out the rest of their lives. At some point after leaving Manhattan, the Doctor and River visited the Singing Towers of Darillium, where they spent their final night together.
These events were first mentioned in Forest Of The Dead, in which River also reveals that the Doctor gave her his sonic screwdriver. In the mini-episode Last Night , the eleventh Doctor met an older eleventh Doctor and River, who were on their way to Darillium, both Doctors knowing what this meant for his time with River.
Finally, River met the tenth Doctor on an expedition to the Library in the 51st century. River knew that this would be the last time she saw the Doctor, even though for him they had never met before. The Doctor was forced to watch on helplessly as she died. Retaining a mental link with Clara, she travelled to Trenzalore with the Doctor, who eventually revealed that he could see and hear her.
Confusing doesn't even begin to cover it, so here's your handy guide to River Song's timeline. The mid-season cliffhanger shockingly reveals that Amy Pond gave birth to a child at the hands of Madame Kovarian, who is destined to be a weapon against the Doctor. In typical Who fashion, this ep features Song as a baby and as a full-grown lady adult. This happened three real-life years after audiences first met River in 'Silence in the Library' keep up at the back.
Having been kidnapped by the Silence and taken to Florida, USA in and raised in the less-than-welcoming Graystark Hall orphanage , Melody has been phoning President Nixon telling him that she's "scared of the spaceman". Matt Smith's Doctor, flanked with Amy, Rory and an adult River Song, tracks down the child who is now wearing a spacesuit her identity unknown to them , and Amy shoots her.
Six months later, Melody makes it to New York City, where, in front of an old tramp in an alleyway, she begins to regenerate. Not into the River Song we're more familiar with, though…. After this regeneration, the young Melody makes it over to the UK and becomes the "best mate" of Amy and Rory as youngsters.
Sadly for Mels, she's shot and then regenerates once more. This time, into Alex Kingston. Kovarian and the Silence get their nasty mitts back on their weapon after River receives her first doctorate and becomes Dr Song.
She is drugged, forced into a spacesuit and taken to Utah, where she "kills" the Eleventh Doctor — this is also where the events of points 2 and 8 take place. The season six finale was suitably bonkers, with time itself broken.
We won't go into just why or how this happened or, indeed, how this was all fixed , but the long and short of it is: it was River's fault.
Wearing an eye patch, she defeats Kovarian and the Silence and sets time right again by marrying the Doctor. We then discover that she didn't actually kill the Doctor in Utah during the events of 'The Impossible Astronaut' just a Teselecta version of him. Just as she is born as "Melody Pond" see No. A somewhat shocked Doctor goes off to find their daughter whilst we all took a summer break.
River receives an invite, whilst imprisoned, with date and map references. She escapes and meets up with Eleventh Doctor and the Ponds in Utah. Where an astronaut "kills" the Doctor. Or rather kills "the Doctor".
