On our end, we heard our callers loud and clear, with no audible background noise. Voice quality was a little bit distorted, however. Callers could hear us clearly as well, but they reported a similar voice quality issue. They said we occasionally sounded a little crackly, as if we had a terrible sore throat.
It was intermittent enough that it didn't bother us that much, but it was certainly noticeable. Speakerphone calls were quite good. Callers did report more of an echo effect, but that's not unusual. We were quite pleased with the fast data speeds on the Bold However, they were more typical of 3G speeds rather than the 4G speeds that T-Mobile claims. Performance is very good with pages rendering really fast, while easy-to-manage tabs make navigating multiple pages at once really easy.
High bit-rate H. The interface for doing so is simple but effective and you can drag and drop files onto the phone. The same applies for music; just drag and drop and away you go. Nonetheless, the phone delivers great-sounding music from its headphone jack, with plenty of oomph and no background hiss. Oh, and did we mention we love that you can play and pause music with that side button?
Few of the streaming music services seemed to be catered for in the BlackBerry App World, though. This is particularly annoying as you can get very useful apps for scanning business cards, and they will struggle to make out the necessary detail on this handset.
Also, you do get a reasonably powerful LED flash and overall colouration and sharpness of images is reasonable. You can shoot at up to p and again results are perfectly reasonable, and the LED is there for shooting in the dark. We also particularly like that you can pause and resume shooting without it automatically creating a second clip.
Also, there are no facilities for editing or uploading video pre-installed nor for images for that matter. The App World, while stocked with the basics and sporting a vastly improved interface over previous versions, is somewhat lacking. Also somewhat lacking is battery life.
All told then, the BlackBerry Bold is just about the perfect upgrade for existing BlackBerry users, assuming you can live with the slight drop in battery life. The touchscreen is very precise and responsive and the trackpad plus touchscreen combo works great.
This one's silky soft and is all-in-all, jaw-dropping amazing. Not one wrong keystroke from the word go--it's that good. Coming to the heart of the device, RIM for years together used a processor clocked at MHz across 3 generations of Bold devices and this new Bold is finally powered by something more respectable - a swift 1. If you consider that its predecessor the Bold had just 2 GB onboard memory, you'd realise this is drastic change for RIM. Thanks to the snappy processor, this BlackBerry was a dream to use.
Quick and responsive, and even reboots were no longer a pain in you know where. Some thanks for the boost in performance must also go to the new BlackBerry OS 7, but only some. While a definite and welcome improvement over OS 6 thanks to some new features, it has still some way to go before the iOS and Android fan boys will be amazed, and that way is the QNX way, which is now on the BlackBerry PlayBook and which is expected to be the next big thing from RIM.
However, OS 7 seems to have some minor issues when it comes to backward compatibility of apps. I faced this problem with of the plus apps on my BlackBerry. But, disclosure must be made that I used a pre-release device-commercially available devices may not face this problem. On the media side of things, audio quality on the Bold is awesome.
